Deception is a progressive disease:

Shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness and their message will spread like cancer.

There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
